Discovering new species: Guadeloupean scientists exploring

IN BRIEF

  • Scientific exploration in Guadeloupe to better understand the biodiversity.
  • A hundred scientists travel through the small islands of the archipelago (Les Saintes, Marie-Galante, la Désirade).
  • Method: sampling on land and at sea, sorting and identification of species.
  • Objective: discover new species and document local wildlife.
  • Two previous expeditions have already made it possible to identify 300 new species.
  • Focus on the double insularity and the different geological histories of the islands.
  • Including a pane terrestrial in exploration to study neglected species.

For six weeks, a hundred scientists embarked on a thrilling adventure in Guadeloupe, crisscrossing the islands of the archipelago such as The Saintes, Marie-Galante and the Desirade. Their mission, entitled “ The Planet revisited ”, aims to acquire valuable data on the biodiversity of these territories with unique ecological riches. In particular, the researchers highlight how the double insularity of Guadeloupe, with its varied geological histories, favors the emergence of species endemic. Dives and terrestrial explorations make it possible to catalog marine and terrestrial organisms, paving the way for the discovery of previously unknown species. Previous campaigns have already revealed up to 300 new species, promising fascinating advances for science and the preservation of the local environment.
