THE administrative court of Guadeloupe recently took an important decision by suspending the execution of a prefectural decree which authorized the hunting of 21 species of birds for the 2024/2025 season. This suspension follows a class action by nature protection associations who expressed their concerns regarding the conservation of these species, notably the Red-necked pigeon and the Crescent dove. The court ruled that the conditions of reproduction and of preservation of these birds were not respected, recalling that only the Minister of Ecology is competent to determine hunting periods. Among the species affected are ducks, teals and waders, highlighting the importance of biodiversity in the region.
